Gwyneth Paltrow’s Equestrian Outfits in ‘The Politician’ are Ridiculously Over-the-Top
In Ryan Murphy’s ‘The Politician,’ student Peyton Hobart sets out to become President of the United States by first conquering the top job at his affluent high school. His doting mother Georgina, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, must make her own tough choices in order to provide her son with the best shot at success.
That means Hobart must tell her lesbian lover and fellow equestrian that they can no longer see each other, all the while wearing a full show outfit.
But first, let’s back up and take a look at this gorgeous stable. Seemingly in Southern California, the airy and remarkably spotless stable features a large lounge complete with fresh-cut flowers and extra-large box stalls. Striking lounges and viewing areas are commonplace at the most discerning of riding stables, especially at those that play host to America’s top show jumping competitions. However, it suffices to say that the stable itself is not the most over-the-top part of the scenes revolving around Georgina’s favorite pastime, horseback riding.
To any rider, the most outrageous faux-pas in this show may very well be Georgina Hobart’s over-the-top equestrian outfits, but one can assume it was clearly done on purpose – just like her right-off-the-runway Gucci looks. The show’s veteran costume designer, Lou Eyrich, teamed up with Paltrow’s stylist Elizabeth Saltzman, sharing inspiration that included snaps of Lauren Hutton and Jackie Kennedy to create a very specific look. For Hobart’s riding outfits, they turned to none other than The Tack Trunk in Amagansett, New York – a mere few minutes from Paltrow’s own house on Long Island.
So, instead of donning a simple polo and schooling breeches in order to break things off with her lover, Georgina Hobart is wearing a show outfit, complete with a stock tie, stock pin, and white show breeches.
Now, if our stable was as spotless as Hobart’s, and we didn’t sweat in the summer and our horse wasn’t muddy/dusty/drooling, we too would wear this equestrian outfit to our stable on a normal Wednesday.
And if we didn’t intend to ride when we went to our stable, of course we’d ride over on a chic bike in a short dress and trench and a pair of throwback brown-and-black riding boots. (We say throwback, but in truth they were on the Michael Kors runway for Fall 2020).
But here is one way in which we do identify with Georgina Hobart. We will, in fact, wear our riding breeches to run our errands. That means popping by the store in our riding boots, running by the school in our breeches, and yes, even going out for a glass of wine in a full riding look. Because why not? Equestrian outfits have inspired fashion designers the world over – we may as well embrace our daily duds as something special.
